Axson PX 223 Vacuum Casting Service

Axson PX 223 is a specialized vacuum casting polyurethane resin formulated to simulate the properties of High-Temperature ABS or thermoplastic composites. Distinguished by its native black color and superior thermal stability, it is a preferred material for functional prototypes that must endure heat stress without deformation. At JUCHENG, we utilize Axson PX 223 to manufacture robust, black structural components without the need for painting, ensuring that the part maintains its color even if scratched. It is the go-to solution for under-the-hood automotive applications and heat-generating electronic enclosures.

Basic Characteristics & Composition

Axson PX 223 is a two-component system (Polyol and Isocyanate) designed for high-performance applications.
  • Thermal Stability: Unlike standard resins that soften at 80°C, PX 223 maintains structural integrity at significantly higher temperatures (up to 120°C after post-curing).
  • Native Black Appearance: The material cures to a deep, consistent black color. This eliminates the risk of paint chipping, making it ideal for parts that will undergo handling or abrasion.
  • Chemical Resistance: It offers better resistance to automotive fluids (oils, greases) compared to standard general-purpose resins.
  • Low Viscosity: Despite its high performance, the liquid mix flows easily into molds, capturing intricate ribs, bosses, and texture details perfectly.

Color Options

  • Standard Color: Black.
  • Why Black Matters: Since the material is pigmented throughout its volume, scratches or wear on the surface will not reveal a different underlying color (unlike painted beige parts). This makes it perfect for "Black Box" prototypes, internal mechanical brackets, and durable external housings.
  • Finishing: Can be sandblasted to a matte finish or polished to a gloss black finish.

Key Technical Parameters

1. Mechanical Properties (Typical values after post-curing):
Property Value Unit Standard
Hardness 80 - 82 Shore D ISO 868
Flexural Modulus 2,100 - 2,300 MPa ISO 178
Tensile Strength 55 - 65 MPa ISO 527
Elongation at Break 5 - 10 % ISO 527
Glass Transition Temp (Tg) 115 - 125 °C TMA
Heat Deflection Temp (HDT) 100 - 110 °C ISO 75
Linear Shrinkage 0.3 - 0.4 % -

2. PROCESSING
  • Mixing: Must be processed in a vacuum casting machine to ensure a void-free structure.
  • Pot Life: Approximately 10-15 minutes at 25°C. This working window allows for casting medium-to-large parts effectively.
  • Demolding: Parts can typically be removed from the silicone mold after 45-60 minutes at 70°C.
  • Post-Curing: Critical Step. To achieve the maximum heat resistance (Tg > 120°C), parts must be post-cured in an oven (e.g., 2 hours at 70°C + 2 hours at 100°C) while supported by fixtures to prevent warping.

3. PRECAUTIONS
  • Support during Cure: Because it is a high-temp material, it requires support fixtures during the post-cure cycle to maintain dimensional accuracy.
  • Moisture: Highly sensitive to moisture before curing. JUCHENG ensures all material containers are nitrogen-purged after opening.

4. STORAGE
  • Conditions: Store in original packaging at 15°C - 25°C. Protect from light and humidity.

Application Scenarios & Fields

Axson PX 223 excels in environments where standard prototyping resins fail due to heat or wear:
  • Automobile: Engine covers, air intake manifolds, sensor housings near the engine block, interior structural brackets.
  • Electronics: Casings for devices that generate heat (routers, power supplies), potting shells.
  • Household Appliances: Coffee maker internal components, hair dryer nozzles, toaster parts.
  • Industrial: Jigs and fixtures, chemical resistant covers, light-duty functional gears.

Vacuum Casting Process Compatibility

  • Silicone Molding: Compatible with standard silicone molds. Release agents are used to ensure easy demolding.
  • Machining: Cured parts are rigid and can be drilled, tapped, or milled for secondary operations.
  • Bonding: Can be bonded with epoxy or cyanoacrylate adhesives for assembling multi-part prototypes.

Advantages vs. Limitations

Advantages Limitations
High Heat Resistance: Withstands temperatures >100°C. Post-Cure Required: Must be heat treated to reach full thermal properties; skipping this results in lower performance.
No Painting Needed: Native black color is durable and scratch-resistant. Color Limitation: Only available in Black. Cannot be tinted to other light colors.
Chemical Resistance: Good stability against oils and greases. Brittleness: Slightly more brittle than PP-like resins; not suitable for snap-fits that undergo extreme bending.
Excellent Surface Detail: Low viscosity ensures perfect replication of mold textures.

Manufacturers & Alternatives

  • Manufacturer: Sika Axson (Sika Advanced Resins).
  • Alternatives at JUCHENG:
