ASTM A36 Structural Steel CNC Machining
ASTM A36 is the most common mild steel used in general construction and heavy machinery manufacturing in North America. As a hot-rolled low-carbon steel, it is valued not for its finish, but for its reliability, excellent weldability, and cost-effectiveness. With a minimum yield strength of 36,000 psi (250 MPa), A36 serves as the structural backbone for everything from bridge components to industrial machine bases. At JUCHENG, we process A36 plate and bar stock in high volumes. We specialize in taking this rough, robust material and machining precise mounting surfaces and features, turning raw structural steel into finished engineering components.

JUCHENG's A36 Machining Capabilities
Handling hot-rolled structural steel requires specific fabrication strategies:
- Scale Management: A36 comes with a hard mill scale. We use face mills with tough carbide grades to remove this abrasive skin efficiently before precision machining begins.
- Large Part Fabrication: A36 is often used for big parts. Our large gantry CNC machines can process heavy base plates and welded frames up to 3 meters in length.
- Weld-Then-Machine: We offer a complete service where we first weld A36 components into a frame, stress-relieve them, and then CNC machine critical surfaces to ensure flatness and alignment.
- Surface Finishing: Since A36 rusts easily, we provide essential secondary operations like Sandblasting, Powder Coating, Galvanizing, or Black Oxide to protect the finished part.
Advantages of CNC Machining A36
| Advantage | Detailed Description | Key Benefit |
| Best Weldability | Low carbon content (max 0.29%) ensures strong welds without cracking. | The industry standard for fabricated structures and welded assemblies. |
| Cost-Effectiveness | One of the most affordable metals available. | Ideal for massive parts where material weight significantly impacts cost. |
| High Ductility | Can be bent and formed without brittle fracture. | Suitable for structural brackets that require forming operations. |
| Good Strength | Reliable yield strength (36 ksi) for general load-bearing applications. | Strong enough for building frames, machine guards, and support beams. |
| Versatility | Widely available in plates, bars, channels, and angles. | Easy to source and integrate into diverse mechanical designs. |
Technical Parameters & Material Standards
We process A36 to meet the strict ASTM standards:
| Grade Category | Specification | Characteristics & Ideal Uses |
| ASTM A36 | Hot Rolled | Characteristics: Delivered with a rough, blue-grey mill scale surface. Not precision ground. Looser thickness tolerances than cold-rolled steel. Uses: Base plates, mounting blocks, fixtures, heavy equipment frames, structural connectors. |
| Equivalent Grades | Q235B / S235JR | Characteristics: Chinese (Q235) and European (S235) equivalents offering similar mechanical performance. Uses: Global structural applications. |
CNC Machining Guidelines for A36
- Surface Finish: A36 does not achieve the same smooth, shiny finish as 1018 Cold Rolled steel. It tends to tear slightly during cutting. We use high speeds and sharp tools to improve the cosmetic appearance.
- Flatness: Hot rolled plates can have internal stress. For critical flatness, we machine both sides equally or perform stress-relieving heat treatment.
- Tapping: Taps can sometimes bind in the soft material. We use form taps or high-lubricity spiral taps to ensure clean threads.
- Rust Prevention: Parts must be oiled or coated immediately after machining to prevent flash rusting.
Application Scenarios
- Heavy Industry: Motor base plates, pump housings, gearbox mounts.
- Construction: Anchor bolts, structural gussets, bridge pins.
- Automobile: Chassis brackets, trailer hitches, roll bars.
- Oil & Gas: Pipe supports, skids, simple valve handles.
- Infrastructure: Manhole covers, drainage grates, signposts.
